Nomad Foods has announced a £2.2 million investment in its flagship manufacturing facility in Lowestoft, Suffolk, reinforcing its commitment to UK food production and supply chain resilience.
The investment will fund a new potato waffle production line at the site, significantly increasing output capacity. Once operational, the upgraded facility will be capable of producing around 18,250 tonnes of potato waffles annually - equivalent to approximately 45 million waffles each year.
The Lowestoft factory plays a vital role within Nomad Foods' European manufacturing network and is closely associated with the company's iconic Birds Eye brand. The site produces a range of popular frozen food products enjoyed by consumers across the UK and Europe and has been operating since 1949, making it one of the country's longest-established food manufacturing facilities.
Nomad Foods is Europe's leading frozen food company, with a portfolio of well-known brands including Birds Eye, Findus, Iglo, Goodfella's and Aunt Bessie's. These household names have helped establish the company as a major player in the frozen food sector, serving millions of consumers across multiple markets.
The latest Lowestoft expansion forms part of a wider strategy to improve efficiency, competitiveness and production capacity across the business. It follows a recent £12 million investment in chicken processing facilities at the same site and complements plans to introduce an on-site wind turbine to support long-term sustainability and energy resilience objectives.
According to the company, continued demand for frozen food favourites has driven the need for additional manufacturing capacity. Potato waffles remain one of Birds Eye's most recognisable and enduring products, with production running around the clock to meet consumer demand.
The Lowestoft facility is also becoming increasingly important as an export hub. Around 15% of its production is now shipped to European markets, supporting demand for Nomad Foods' brands beyond the UK and helping strengthen supply chain capabilities across the region.
The investment highlights Nomad Foods' confidence in UK manufacturing and its commitment to supporting the growth of its flagship brands.
By expanding production capacity and investing in future-focused infrastructure, the company is positioning its Lowestoft operation as a key centre for frozen food innovation and manufacturing excellence in Europe.
