How to Handle a Curveball.
Crumble…. make some incoherent noises…. start crying.
We’re only joking, this is only a last resort. With a lot of these questions there is no right or wrong answer, it’s all about how you handle pressure and the unexpected.
The best way to handle a curveball in an interview is super simple, here’s some easy steps to make sure you don’t start crying in the corner of the office.
1. Prepare Yourself!
Accepting that something like this will come up, is the first step to not crumbling when it does. There’s no real way to prepare for some of these, but just be mindful that at some point you may be called upon to use a little bit of creativity, so practice at home beforehand with a friend asking you the most random questions they can think of and giving you 5 mins to answer. Not only will it prepare you, but also if done while having a few beers, can be great fun.
2. Take a Breath
So, the question comes up, it’s so far out of the box that the box isn’t even in the same galaxy! What do you do! Breathe.
Sounds silly, but take a deep breath and look the interviewer in the eye, and stay calm. Maintaining confidence is key here.
3. Buy Time, Ask Questions.
You’re not expected to have the answer straight away, so don’t be afraid to ask questions to get more information and buy yourself time to think, it’s better to do this than sit there in an awkward silence while in your thoughts
4. Can’t Answer, Then Do So Later.
If you really can’t find that perfect response, then don’t panic and be honest and let them know you’ll send them a response in your thankyou email.
